Laia Jufresa creció en el bosque de la niebla de Veracruz y pasó su adolescencia en París. Cuando en 2001 se mudó a la Ciudad de México descubrió que no sabía cruzar la calle. Desde entonces escribe narrativa. Es autora del libro de cuentos El esquinista, el libro álbum La apuesta y el audiolibro Veinte, veintiuno. Umami fue su primera novela. Se ha traducido a nueve idiomas. En el festival de Primeras novelas de Francia, en 2016, se le votó como la mejor primera novela en español de ese año. En inglés, traducida por Sophie Hughes, ganó el premio PEN Translates Award y fue finalista del Best Translated Book Awards 2016. Se le ha nombrado como uno de los mejores escritores de Latinoamérica (Bogotá39) y de Mexico (Mexico20). Su ficción ha aparecido en Vogue, Words Without Borders y McSweeneys, su no-ficción en El País, Netflix, la BBC.
