Joan Brady, 1939 in San Francisco geboren, wuchs in Berkeley auf. Von 1955 an tanzte sie im San Francisco Ballett und wechselte im Jahre 1960 zum New York City Ballett, um danach ihren Abschluss an der Columbia University in Philosophie zu machen.1963heiratete sie den Schriftsteller Dexter Masters. Ein Jahr später zog die Familie nach England. Joan Brady lebt in Oxford.
