The Author: Born in Silesia in 1906, Gerhard Rudolf Schade came to the U.S. in 1926. After receiving his M.A. from Columbia University, he became a German teacher at St. Paul's School, Concord, N.H. Until his retirement he wrote poetry, numerous volumes of diaries, newspaper articles - all championing German language and culture. For his many efforts, he was awarded the Bundesverdienstkreuz.
His son, Richard E. Schade, who edited this book, is Professor of German at the University of Cincinnati.
