Delve into the fascinating history of the Vettones, enigmatic pre-Roman inhabitants linked to the rich Celtic culture who left their mark on the lands surrounding the imposing Sistema Central during the first millennium BC. The pages of this book reveal the mysterious vestiges of their culture, from the majestic settlements to their powerful and beautifully decorated weapons. Avila, Salamanca, the south of Zamora and the northeast of Cáceres witnessed the grandeur of the Vettones, whose villages were authentic fortresses with granite walls carved with horse carvings, sculptural manifestations of bulls and pigs, the famous boars that stood as guardians of the land. These imposing boars not only marked territory, but also possessed an apotropaic character, deploying a protective magic to ward off evil from their domains. Through these pages, you will accompany the Vettones in their daily life, exploring their main economic activity as the lords of cattle, as defined by archaeologist Jesús Álvarez-Sanchís, one of the greatest experts on the subject. You will discover how, with the permission of war, another of their passions, the Vettones forged their identity on the basis of livestock and the defense of their lands. Vettones is an exciting journey into the heart of a unique culture, where magic, war and everyday life intertwine to reveal the secrets of a people who left an indelible mark on the history of the Iberian Peninsula.
