Three years after he lost his wife to cancer, Jason Philips-now pushing fifty and going through midlife angst-is jolted back to life when work in his DHS Alexandria, Virginia office picks up with the accumulation of more data collected on government graft and corruption. Next, at home one night by the PC, he discovers a forgotten lottery ticket he bought a month ago and learns that he won $745 million. Endowed with a deep sense of morals and compassion, his new-found roles in life come in conflict with one another-that of being part of the crusade against the evil in the world and that of being a man of charity with his life-changing windfall. The plot and characterizations evolve through this conflict the protagonist lives through in the story-the faces of human suffering that challenge his humanity, stokes his empathy, paralleled against the faces of greed, corruption and abuse of power.
