The year this book was published brought many changes to the author. After ten years teaching in public schools, she has transitioned out of her role in a severe disabilities special education classroom. She now teaches full-time as a sexual violence services coordinator. While her "students" are still made up of those who are very vulnerable, her "classroom" is now found in shelters, jails, hospitals, support groups, advocacy centers, police stations, and anywhere else she finds those who have been sexually violated. In 2014, Melisa Mel's extensive work with crime victims nominated her for the National Crime Victim's Service Award through the US Office for Victims of Crime. She felt honored to be nominated for such an honor.
