Autorenporträt
Maryse Condé nació en 1937 en la isla de Guadalupe. Estudió en París y, tras vivir largos años en África, comenzó su carrera literaria en Francia. En 1985 se mudó a Estados Unidos y en 1987 recibió el Grand Prix Littéraire de la Femme por Yo, Tituba, la bruja negra de Salem (1986). Entre sus otras obras destacan sus memorias Corazón que ríe, corazón que llora (1999) y La vida sin maquillaje (2012), así como las novelas La Deseada (1997), Historia de la mujer caníbal (2003), Victoire. La madre de mi madre (2010) y El Evangelio del Nuevo Mundo (2022). En 2018 fue galardonada con el Premio Nobel Alternativo de Literatura, y en 2021 recibió el Prix Mondial Cino del Duca por su labor humanista en la cultura. Falleció en abril 2024 en la pequeña ciudad de Gordes, al sur de Francia.
