Born Vinnette Justine Carroll in New York City to Edgar Edgerton and Florence (Morris) Carroll. Carroll s father encouraged his daughters to become physicians, and as a compromise, she chose psychology. She later completed doctoral work in psychology at Columbia University and she worked as a clinical psychologist with the NYC Bureau of Child Guidance before pursuing acting.
