Vinod Kinariwala was a student at Gujarat College in the city of Ahmedabad in western India. On August 9, 1942, the first day of the Quit India Movement led by Mahatma Gandhi, Kinariwala was shot dead by a British officer for trying to hoist the Indian flag while protesting in front of the college. When the British officer, standing just a few feet from him, asked him to put the flag down, Kinariwala replied defiantly that he was not going to do anything of the sort. The officer shot him at point-blank range. Vinod Kinariwala was only 18 years of age at the time of the incident.
