This research work is about violation of taboos which is one of the agents of sociopolitical disintegration among the Igbo people in Nigeria. In this work, the meaning of taboos, different types of taboos and the possible reasons for their institution were highlighted. In an attempt to accomplish this work therefore, it was divided into five unequal chapters. Chapter one talked about the problem of the study, purpose of the study, the importance of the study and listed the leading research questions. In chapter two, the literature review discussed various peoples' views about taboos. Different types of taboos and the reasons for their institution were identified. Chapter three clearly brought out the methods used to make the study a reality. In chapter four, the data collected, were analyzed. Here, the lists of the four different types of taboos were shown. In the analysis also, the possible reasons for institution of these taboos, the extent of violation among men, and among women, causes of violation and the sociopolitical consequences of the violation, were exposed. The study was rounded off with summary, suggestions and conclusion in the last chapter.
