Unpublished until long after Mendelssohn's death, the Sonata in F MWV Q26 was composed in 1838, while Mendelssohn was serving as the music director of the Leipzig Gewandhaus, and was intended for Ferdinand David, the concertmaster of the Gewandhaus.
