Felicia Buttz Clark was born on July 8, 1862, in New York City, to Henry Anson Buttz. An American author and historian, Clark is best known for her historical novels that explore themes of faith, personal growth, and societal conflict. Her writing often centered on the internal struggles of individuals torn between their personal beliefs and the expectations of the society around them. Her most notable work, Virgilia; or, Out of the Lion's Mouth, set in ancient Rome during the rise of Christianity, explores the conflict between the emerging Christian faith and the long-standing pagan traditions of the Roman Empire. Clark's novels reflect her deep interest in religious and moral dilemmas, particularly the challeng of embracing a new spiritual path in a world resistant to change. Through her characters, she examined the courage required to stand by one's convictions in the face of societal pressure. While Clark's works were not widely celebrated during her lifetime, her thoughtful exploration of themes such as faith, sacrifice, and transformation remains relevant. Felicia Buttz Clark passed away on February 23, 1931, at the age of 68. Her literary legacy endures, offering a window into the historical and spiritual challenges of her time.
