Visited by Chance is a memoir in the form of 23 separate "stories" conveying out-of-the-ordinary events and encounters throughout the author's life. They tell about his childhood in Whitby, ON, his exposure to 1960s coffeehouse culture and Toronto's Yorkville, his experiences as a young man working in rural India, and his later visits to Santorini in Greece, Paris, auto factories in Ohio, the Lost Coast of California, Costa Rica, and Tasmania. The longest story is a detailed account of his participation in a religious movement of the 1970s-80s called the Ecumenical Institute.
