Dr. M. Ruth Swafford, a retired cardiovascular and thoracic anesthesiologist, was born to uneducated parents and raised in the South at a time when people of Color were routinely marginalized and not expected to obtain an education. Her story chronicles her journey and the obstacles she overcame to become a successful practicing physician.
