Cardiovascular disease (CVD) refers to all kinds of diseases and conditions involving the heart or blood vessels or both. CVDs are considered to be 'silent' diseases whose symptoms are not evident in patients suffering from them till the disease is in advanced state. Types of CVDs include : ¿ Coronary heart disease - disease of the blood vessels supplying the heart. ¿ Cerebrovascular disease - disease of the blood vessels supplying the brain. Bleeding from the blood vessels in the brain or from blood clots may also cause stroke. ¿ Peripheral arterial disease - disease of blood vessels that supply blood to arms and legs. ¿ Rheumatic heart disease - damage to the heart valves and muscle because of rheumatic fever. ¿ Congenital heart disease - abnormalities of heart structure prevailing at birth. ¿ Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism - blood clots in the leg veins, which has a chance of dislodge and move to the heart and lungs.
