Vodlozero National Park and Nature Reserve in the Republic of Karelia, designated as a national park by the government of Russia, covers some 5,800 km², including 6,000 km² of undisturbed wetland taiga and is the second largest national park in Europe after Yugyd Va National Park. The main attraction is Lake Vygozero. In 1996 it was considered for inclusion as a World Heritage Site but was declined. The reason for the declination was that it was not a "natural" site. Currently, it is being resubmitted under the criteria of a "cultural landscape."
