The Virunga Volcanic Province is one of the most active volcanic regions on the planet. It currently has two active volcanoes, Nyamulagira and Nyiragongo. The Nyiragongo volcano, located about 15 kilometers from Goma, last erupted in May 2021. This book provides tools for gaining a better understanding of how volcanoes work by identifying trends that could be precursors of volcanic eruptions by examining changes in seismic waveforms recorded prior to eruption and their relationship to volcanic eruption, modeling the statistical distribution of eruptive frequency, which provides basic information for quantifying volcanic hazard and constraining the physics of the eruptive process. This book should be on the shelves of scientists, volcanologists, and graduate students who are interested in the prevention and mitigation of volcanic disasters.
