The Volkhov Front (Russian: ) was a Front (i.e. a military formation of roughly Army Group size) of the Soviet Army during the First Period of the Second World War.It was formed as an expediency of an early attempt to halt the advance of the Wehrmacht Army Group North in its offensive thrust towards Leningrad. Initially the Front would operate to the South of Leningrad metropolitan area, with its flank on Lake Ladoga illustrated by the map of the opening attacks by Soviet Armies in the Tikvin offensive operation below.
