It is part of the unorganized borough and therefore has no borough seat. Its largest community is the city of Hooper Bay, on the Bering Sea coast. The area was defined and named in 1913 for Wade Hampton III, a Confederate general in the American Civil War, Governor and United States Senator from the state of South Carolina.
