The Oklahoma National Guard used the building since it was built, until it was abandoned along with 58 other armories in the state of Oklahoma after they were ordered to be closed in 2006 by the federal Base Realignment and Closure Commission.The current state law states that municipalities and other government or nonprofit agencies will be given an opportunity to operate the former armory buildings. However the Wagoner Armory, along with many of the other armories, were contaminated with lead from bullets fired in their underground rifle ranges. A state agency plans on hiring contractors to remove the lead contamination and any asbestos found in the abandoned armories.
