In 1997 the hospital and medical school realigned to become the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. The hospital is now a Level 1 trauma center that serves the entire Piedmont region of North Carolina. WFUBMC is also home to AirCare, the hospital's critical care transport service that operates both ground ambulances and a helicopter at the critical care level.
