Wakefield includes the villages of Union and Sanbornville.Settled by colonists from Dover and Somersworth, Wakefield was granted in 1749 by Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth. The town went through the names Ham's-town, East-town and Watertown before it was incorporated as Wakefield in 1774 by Colonial Governor John Wentworth. Wakefield, in Yorkshire, England, is near Wentworth Castle, the home of the Wentworth ancestors. Once a sledge and stage stop on the road to the White Mountains, Wakefield is a picturesque town of antique buildings and was home until 2007 to the Museum of Childhood.
