Wakhan River (Persian: Ab-i-Wakhan, Tajik: Wakhandarya) is the name of the Sarhad branch of the Panj River along its upper length, in Afghanistan.The river arises out of the Hindu Kush, southwest of the Wakhijrui Pass. It then flows roughly 30 miles without being joined by any tributaries. Here the river has a very broad bed, almost a mile broad at points, and is fordable at all times. Little if any vegetation but dwarf willow grows in this region. Then, near Bozai Gumbaz, it is joined by the Little Pamir branch of the river.
