John Biggers, Ph.D., D.Sc. is Emeritus Professor of Cell Biology at Harvard Medical School, Boston. He was born in Reading, England on 18 August, 1923. He graduated with degrees in Veterinary Science and Physiology at the University of London, and was later awarded the degrees of Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of Science. In 1971 he was appointed Professor of Physiology, Harvard Medical School, and later Professor of Cell Biology with the renaming of Departments. Formerly he was Professor of Population Dynamics at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and King Ranch Research Professor of Repro¬ductive Physiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. Before immigrating to the USA he held Faculty Appointments at the Universities of London, Sydney, N.S.W., and Sheffield. From 1954 to 1955 he was Commonwealth Fellow at St. Johns College, Cambridge. He has taught courses and seminars in several areas of physiology and reproductive biology and has frequently been an invited speaker. John Biggers has received several awards including the Hartman Award of the Society for the Study of Reproduction, Pioneer Award of the International Embryo Transfer Society, and the Marshall Medal of the Society for the Study of Fertility (UK). He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, an Honorary Member of the Society for the Study of Fertility, and a Life Member of the New England Fertility Society. John Biggers is a Former President of the Society for the Study of Reproduction and an Editor of the Biology of Repro-duction. He has been a consultant to the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and he was Chief Scientific Advisor to the Ethics Committee of the US Department of Health, Education and Welfare that made recommendations on human in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer. He is a consultant to LifeGlobal Group LLC, Guelph, Canada. John Biggers has published over 250 papers in such fields gametogenesis, fertilization and early embryonic development, placentation, infertility, sperm preservation and statistics. He continues to maintain these interests during retirement. Carol Kountz, Ph.D. is Associate Professor Emerita of Writing, Grand Valley State University, Allendale, Michigan. In addition to teaching, writing, and lecturing in an academic setting, she has also served as managing editor for Plays Inc., Publishers and The Writer magazine.
