The introduction identifies the major branches of Waltons in Virginia. More detailed information on these branches is provided in several appendices. The focus of the book is the New Kent County Waltons whose progenitors were Edward Walton Jr. (1672-1720) and his wife Elizabeth. Special attention is given to their descendants in Central Virginia, especially those who lived in or passed through Cumberland County. This includes George Walton, Signer of the Declaration of Independence. Certain branches were traced into Southern and Western states for a total of eleven generations. Following the Walton genealogy is a chapter on the early settlement of Central Virginia. This precedes short genealogical histories of seventeen related surnames. These families were concentrated in Buckingham and adjoining counties. The surnames are Booker, Christian, Coleman, Davis, Fields, Guthrie, Harris, Harrison, Harvey, Hunter, Jones, Shepherd, Stratton, Vawter, Walker, Williamson and Word. This book not only documents one important branch of the Walton family but presents new material on families who have been neglected in the genealogical literature of Central Virginia.
