As of 2000, the population was 58,039. Its shire town is Montpelier, the state capital. The center of population of Vermont is located in Washington County, in the town of Warren. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 695 square miles (1,801 km²), of which, 689 square miles (1,785 km²) of it is land and 6 square miles (16 km²) of it (0.90%) is water.In the county, the population was spread out with 23.50% under the age of 18, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 28.70% from 25 to 44, 26.00% from 45 to 64, and 12.90% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.10 males.
