The Meski purple bacteria is being developed using evolution strategy, cultivated in tubular reactors and flat plate reactors, irradiated in a circadian rhythm, protected by carotenoid-like light filters and forced to produce hydrogen for weeks at a time without propagating. Pilot experiments show how in the future purple bacteria and green algae in an artificial symbiosis will be able to split water on an ongoing basis.
