The impact of inadequate waste management results in public health and environmental risks. The problem of solid waste management is becoming more and more conspicuous in Bayelsa State. This study used a mixed method approach. Risk analysis and waste management option appraisal using multi-criteria analysis and contingent valuation method. The study revealed that there are several illegal and uncontrolled dumpsites all over the state. A majority of the people, rural and urban dwellers usually dispose of their wastes at illegal dumpsites. The results show that improper waste management in the state results in the pollution of the environment, this has also caused the prevalence of diseases such as malaria, cholera and diarrhoea. Waste recycling and composting were identified as the best options of waste management in Bayelsa state. This study provides a more consistent risk-based multi-criteria decision making tool for waste management in Bayelsa State. This research will be beneficial in the implementation and execution of waste management projects in a transparent, accountable, evident base and scientific manner, effective allocation and utilisation of financial resources
