Efstratios Kalogirou is the co-founder and first chair of the Waste to Energy Research & Technology Council/WTERT Greece (Synergia). In addition, he was the first vice-chair of Global WTERT Council, headquartered in the Earth Engineering Center of Columbia University. The ISWA Working Group on Energy Recovery (ISWA-WGER) has made him a permanent member of their organization. He graduated from the Department of Chemical Engineering at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. His PhD is from the National Technical University of Athens, School of Chemical Engineering. He is an international expert on waste management, specialized in state-of-the-art waste to energy (WtE) novel technologies. His major scientific fields are energy from waste, potable water resources, and ozone sterilization technologies. Many environmental projects worldwide (especially in WtE feasibility studies, preliminary studies, etc.) include his involvement. He has authored many scientific and technical papers, especially on WtE. In addition, he coordinates worldwide intensive courses and seminars on advancing state-of-the-art sustainable waste management, and WtE as a renewable energy source in the framework of circular economy, all contributing to green development and carbon credits. These courses and seminars are done in close cooperation with local policy/decision makers, governmental authorities, industry, and universities. Since 2024, he has served as the technical director of Scandinavian ESG, with a focus in WtE projects in Africa and India.
