This book reviews the latest information on the assessment of surface and groundwater resources in Algeria. The authors cover a large diversity of topics, including the status and assessment of water resources, impacts of pesticides, soil droughts, analysis of flood characteristics, hydrogeological investigations and modeling applications, and evapotranspiration. Special attention is given to the impacts of climate changes on water resources. The assessment methods present in this book can be used or adapted to study other regions of North Africa, Middle East and/or in the Mediterranean with similar climate conditions as Algeria.
This book and the companion volume Water Resources in Algeria - Part II: Water Quality, Treatment, Protection and Development will appeal to engineers, researchers, graduate students and policymakers interested in the field of groundwater and surface water assessment.

Autorenporträt
¿Prof. Abdelazim Negm is a professor of Water Resources at the Faculty of Engineering, Zagazig University, Egypt, since 2004. He was the vice dean of the Faculty of Engineering of ZU from 12/2008 to 12/2011 and was the head of the Environmental Engineering Dept. at Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST), Egypt 10/2013 to 9/2015. He has participated in several international projects since 200, and published more than 300 articles in national and international journals and conferences.  Dr. Abdelkader Bouderbala is an assistant professor at the University of Chlef. He worked in many companies of hydrogeology for more than 10 years as an engineer. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Hydraulic at Earth Sciences Department, University of Khemis-Miliana (Algeria). His research interests mainly focus on the geophysical techniques applied in hydrogeology, hydrogeochemistry, and hydrogeology, evaluation of seawater intrusion in coastal aquifers, pollution in agricultural areas, groundwater resources management, groundwater vulnerability assessment to pollution. Dr. Haroun Chenchouni is an Associate Professor at The Department of Natural and Life Sciences, University of Tebessa, Algeria. He is an ecologist with research interest focusing on the study of the population and community dynamics in natural and manmade North African ecosystems. He uses statistical modelling approaches to understand how natural environments and anthropogenic perturbations affect biological interactions, population dynamics and influence community diversity.   Prof. Damià Barceló is a Full Research Professor at the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Studies IDAEA-CSIC and has been Head of the Environmental Chemistry Department (Barcelona, Spain) since 1999 and Director of the Catalan Institute of Water Research (ICRA) (Girona, Spain) since May 2008. Since 2011 he has been chairman of the Scientific and Technological Board (STB) of the European Union-Joint Programming Initiative on "Water Challenges for a Changing World". His scientific focus is on method development and monitoring of priority, new, and emerging pollutants, in particular in water quality assessment and management. He is the series co-editor of The Handbook of Environmental Chemistry.
