In WE ARE PLAYING ROULETTE WITH YOUR FUTURE G. Spencer Myers tells Ian, his grandson, and Ian's generation that, among the lessons he learned over his lifetime, the one about ecology he learned from his grandfather while fishing from a small row boat was actually a warning. A warning that has evolved into a threat to humanity so great that scientists have given it a name: The Anthropocene --- a human caused extinction. There have been five others. The last one, 65 million years ago, was responsible for killing the dinosaurs who ruled the planet for millions of years. "When I was in my thirties, I wanted to live to be 100," Myers tells Ian and outlines his path to get there. He shares humorous stories about running away from home, his first tattoo, the biggest fish he ever caught, pitching a no-hitter, earning an MBA, achieving a six-figure income and writing three books. All intended to be inspirations for Ian and all grandsons who will face the inevitable pitfalls and setbacks of life. "Happiness is a choice," he says. Then he apologizes, "Unfortunately we have become addicted to the pesticides, plastics and fossil fuels that I fear will deprive you of such a future."
