Serena Virk enseigne en Ontario depuis une vingtaine d'années. C'est en cherchant du matériel pédagogique sur le jour du Souvenir qu'elle a réalisé qu'il existait très peu de ressources pour parler aux enfants de la contribution des soldats Noirs pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. Il y en avait pour les adolescents et pour les adultes, mais rien destiné aux jeunes lecteurs. Il était important pour elle que cette lacune soit comblée. Le livre a été révisé par Kathy Grant, Sean Foyn et Mathias Joost. Kathy Grant est historienne et a été membre, à titre de spécialiste en histoire, du Comité consultatif national sur la présentation d'excuses à l'égard du traitement du 2e Bataillon de construction par le gouvernement du Canada. Sean Foyn, de l'organisme AfriCanadian Searchers, est un chercheur et producteur de contenu historique. Il a aussi été membre du Comité consultatif national sur la présentation d'excuses.
