Greater purchasing power encouraged elite altruism in ways ignored by social scientists. Philanthropy defines and exemplifies their values, confirms their social pre-eminence, not so much over the poor as those immediately beneath them. Both established and new elites need to show off their status and their capacity to act charitably in life and death.

Felipe Portocarrero holds a PhD in Sociology from St. Antony s College at Oxford University and a MA in Sociology from Universidad Católica del Perú. Since 2009, he is Chancellor of Universidad del Pacífico in Lima, Perú. His research interest is primarily devoted to the economic history of the elites and philanthropy in Latin America.
