Alek Wek, geboren 1977 in Waw/ Sudan, gehört dem Volk der Dinka an und floh während des Bürgerkrieges im Sudan nach Großbritannien, wo sie die London School of Fashion besuchte. 1995 wird sie entdeckt und ziert 1997 als erstes dunkelhäutiges Model das Titelblatt der "Elle": Seither gehört sie zur Top-Liga der Supermodels, ist Gründerin eines Taschenlabels, namens Wek1933. Sie engagiert sich unter anderem für UNICEF, Aidshilfe und die Welthungerhilfe. Seit 2003 lebt Alek Wek in New York City.
