China is a fast expanding global economic power, and companies around the world are looking for ways to operate their businesses within its borders. "Western Businesses in China" outlines the key factors to consider for smaller businesses wanting to enter who are not privy to the resources of global enterprises. The focus is on choosing the right location, considering financial liabilities, handling regulatory issues, and dealing with local partners. There is a special emphasis on the extremely important and often misunderstood cultural intricacies that must be mastered. Actual case studies of a SME and a large corporation are examined to provide practical examples of successful western businesses in China and their different approaches to: taking partners, the relationship building rituals unique to this culture, and the regulatory requirements that often require the disclosure of closely held confidential business practices and technologies. The aim is to assist SMEs with a broad understanding of what to expect and to develop an optimized strategy for entry into the Chinese market.
