Since the 1980s, the intellectual development in the People's Republic of China has experienced several far-reaching changes related to the opening up of the country towards the West. Chinese intellectuals have started translating numerous philosophical books and articles into Chinese and have published an even greater number of their own studies on Western philosophy. The following bibliography covers the years 1993-1997. It attempts to compile all Chinese publications, books as well as articles, on Western philosophy in the People's Republic of China within that period. The number of titles amounts to approximately 6000. The figures look even more impressive if one bears in mind that titles on Marxism-Leninism have not been included. The quantity of all translations and Chinese studies on Western philosophy represents a phenomenal feat by the Chinese intellectuals. What consequences it will have in the long term cannot be estimated.
