This is a collection of short stories written over many years originally meant for the author's two daughters. He wanted them to know what it was like growing up how, when, and where he did. As a boy the author spent a great deal of time listening to the conversations of adults. He was an observer who, it turns out, had a very good memory. His family urged him to expand his audience and share this glimpse of life in small-town Iowa during the 1950s and 1960s. The stories are based in fact and actual events, with some liberties taken regarding chronology and dialogue for effect. Living in small towns in Iowa during the '50s and '60s had its advantages and disadvantages. It was certainly isolated and protected from the world at large. In a town where everyone knows everyone, it's difficult to keep secrets, hide misbehavior, or act outside certain norms. Friends and family made certain that its young residents were imbued with a sense of honor, respect, and pride for family, hometown, and state.
