Known by many names, chronic Lyme disease has become a dreaded condition impacting the lives of tens of thousands of people each year, young and old, throughout the United States and other countries. It is the persistent, sustained, or post-treatment illness resulting from a tick-borne infection. But unlike most other physical ailments, modern medicine has not been prepared to minister to its sufferers very well. At best the disease has been marginalized and not given to adequate training by medical professionals for diagnosis and treatment. And within the medical establishment, in general, it is often unrecognized as a definitive condition. Therefore, it is often misdiagnosed and improperly treated, if at all. Most doctors have little more than heard of the condition, and many deny its existence altogether. With most diseases there is a somewhat comforting dependence upon a doctor for knowledge and confident care. For this reason living with chronic Lyme disease frequently means not only dealing with a physical condition, which can be debilitating at times, but it also means contending with a lack of medical support or understanding. Discouragement, abandonment, or hopelessness may be regular tempters each morning and evening, day after day, and year after year. In this small volume I hope that you will find a few smiles and some comfort from my personal story with Lyme disease. All of life is, for me, an adventure with God, and it can be for you as well.
