When life calls you out, it's usually onto a Highway, is a memoir in the sense that all the stories are true but it in no way attempts to present a complete overview of my life. The situations and events that I write about are those that inspired me to write, sometimes poetry, sometimes prose. The book toggles back and forth between the two. I like to think of this book as the tales and observations of a human growing up in the latter half of the twentieth century. Austin Metze lives with his wife Lainey in Woodstock, New York. In addition to writing poetry and prose he has worked for over fifty years as an art director for such publications as Time magazine, Us magazine, and People. He is the principal of Metze Design, a book design firm based in Woodstock.
