David Saunders was appointed first warden of the newly declared Skomer Island National Nature Reserve in 1960 where he remained in post with his wife and two children for seven years. Subsequently he was organiser of Operation Seafarer (the first national seabird census of 1969-1970) and later director of the then West Wales Wildlife Trust. He was author of the first Where to Watch Birds in Wales published in 1987, followed by two subsequent editions, and was awarded the MBE in 2003 for services to nature conservation in Wales and in 2014 a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Welsh Ornithological Society.
