Alan was brought up in Cookstown in Northern Ireland. He went on to study at Trinity College Dublin and Cambridge University. For over thirty years he worked as a lecturer in the Centre for Mathematics Education at the Open University. He now lives in the Midlands of England with his wife Sheila.
