This book examined various factors and reasons which influenced music undergraduates and lecturers in five universities to pursue a music career in Malaysia. The undergraduates made their decision to pursue music mainly during secondary school while the lecturers decided only after being offered places in university. Many of the students did not face any objections while the lecturers faced many objections from their family. This represented a shift in mindset and better acceptance of music careers. They also stated that early exposure to group musical activities, past music experiences and having the interest and talents were the key to their decision. Some respondents had declined to pursue more established or conventional careers due to their passion for music. The lecturers advised students wishing to pursue a music career to know the job market well before graduation, and to take the initiative to explore unconventional areas in the music market to succeed. The study should be especially useful to music students, educators, parents, as well as school administrators and counselors who are advising students embarking on their future careers and tertiary studies.
