Meticulously photographed with images that are both artful and accurate, the two volumes in this guidebook series cover more than 375 wildflower species now found in southeastern Iowa including many similar species, rarities, and uncommon wildflowers not normally listed in regional guidebooks. Also included are many newcomers to Iowa. Volume 1 covers 180 wildflowers first blooming in March, April, and May; volume 2 covers almost 200 flowers first blooming in June through September. Clear and concise descriptions complement the vivid photographs to show you exactly what to look for and help you quickly and confidently identify wildflowers whether in your backyard or along the trail. Flowers in both volumes are organized by the month they first bloom in Iowa. Each flower has a full-page photograph along with inset photographs where they will further aid identification, a description of its blooms and leaves, and additional information on its blooming months, height, common and scientific names, the habitat where it is typically found, and similar species. The hills, bluffs, valleys, and waterways of southeastern Iowa are home to many hundreds of wild flowering plants. Don Weiss came to both photography and wildflowers later than most. Although he dabbled in photography in the late 1970s, it quickly became apparent that film and processing made an expensive hobby, and his Canon AT1 sat on the shelf for two decades. Don spent over twenty-five years in the information technology industry, nine years as an entrepreneur and over thirteen years in higher education. In the early 2010s, as an accidental outcome of some workplace training, his interest in photography was rekindled and he purchased a Nikon D5100. Shortly after moving to southeastern Iowa after almost forty years living in the Kansas City area, Don found himself in the middle of a project to photograph wildflowers at Geode State Park, a twenty-minute drive from his house. With little formal photography or botany training, he spent over six years learning, reading, and hiking through nature, photography, and botany to put this book together and finding some rare flowers for SE Iowa along the way.
