In India between 1885 and 1899 he served with the 12th Lancers and Bengal Lancers, saw action on the North-West Frontier and was adjutant of the Viceroy''s Bodyguard, his regimental base being Dehradun. He was married in 1894 and promoted to captain in 1896.
