Thomas Day Seymour was an American classical scholar, born on April 1, 1848, in Hudson, Ohio. He is best known for his career as a Professor of Greek at Yale University, where he dedicated much of his scholarly work to the study of ancient Greek literature, particularly the works of Homer. Seymour was regarded as one of the leading classical scholars of his time and made significant contributions to the academic study of Homeric texts. His expertise in Greek language and literature, along with his detailed analyses of Homer's epics, helped shape the field of classical studies in the United States. Throughout his career, Seymour published numerous works on Greek literature, and his scholarly rigor earned him a respected place among the intellectual elite. Seymour's influence extended beyond his academic work as he also mentored many students who went on to have distinguished careers themselves. He passed away on December 31, 1907, at the age of 59, in New Haven, Connecticut. Seymour's legacy lives on through his contributions to classical scholarship and his impact on the study of ancient Greek texts. He was the father of Charles Seymour and grandfather to Charles Seymour, Jr.
