Ella Cheever Thayer was an American playwright and novelist, born on September 14, 1849, in Portland, Maine. She is best known for her 1879 novel Wired Love: A Romance in Dots and Dashes, which was a significant success and a pioneering work of its time, exploring the intersection of romance and technology. Thayer worked as a telegraph operator, which greatly influenced her writing, particularly in her portrayal of communication through telegraphy. In addition to her writing, she contributed to the development of American literature in the late 19th century. Thayer's work often examined themes of love, technology, and societal expectations, reflecting her own experiences in a rapidly changing world. She passed away on October 28, 1925, in Boston, Massachusetts, at the age of 76. Though not as widely recognized today, Thayer's Wired Love remains an important early exploration of how technology can shape human connections.
