Joseph Needham made his name as a biochemist and embryologist, and, having been elected a Fellow of the Royal society, was influenced by the friendship of Chinese scientific colleagues to embark upon the study of their language and culture. This led to the massive study of china’s scientific history, Science and Civilization in China, now being published in a number of volumes by the Cambridge University Press. In the sixties and seventies Joseph Needham was for ten years Master of Gonville and Callus College in Cambridge.
