This is the dramatic tagline of the 1985 film Witness, famously directed by Peter Weir. However, the film offers a lot more – it is in fact 3 movies in one: A riveting crime thriller, a moving love story, and a poignant clash of cultures between mainstream American culture and that of the Amish people. All of this is supported by Maurice Jarre’s great music, by John Seale’s beautiful cinematography, and by a group of superb actors, especially Harrison Ford, Kelly McGillis, Lukas Haas, Jan Rubeš, Danny Glover, and Alexander Godunov. This book is an attempt at showing why Witness is a fantastic film and why, after so many years, it is still worth (re-)watching.
