Feeling unsuited to the era in which he lives, Burt Hecker, a sixty-three-year-old medieval re-enactor, leaves his home in upstate New York to travel to Germany to celebrate the nine-hundredth birthday of Saint Hildegard von Bingen and to rescue his estranged son Tristan from Prague, revealing the reasons for his obsessive devotion to a time other than his own.
