The book tries to capture the dialogue between the state and the women's movement in India. It is interested in understanding the conflicting nature of the relationship where on the one hand the women's movement has to make demands from the state, and on the other it also has to make demands against the same. It is this relationship between the two that is being explored in this work so as to understand the potential of empowering women through laws. Finally this work attempts at understanding the relationship between women and the Indian state.
